Rules for Holy Living

1 Peter 2:11 “ Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your souls.”

Lord, our world and our culture promote all kinds of sin: selfishness, arrogance, greed, lust, hate, and war.  It is so important that we keep our eyes on You, not on each other or things.  We are to be detached from this world; we do not belong to it anymore, Praise God!

Help me, Lord to always remember that this world is not my home anymore.  I certainly enjoy Your creation while I am here, but the “stuff” and sin of this world are not to be an attraction to me anymore.

1 Peter 2:13 “Live such good lives among the Pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.”

Lord, someone else wrote, “Live such a good life that if someone accuses you of evil, no one would ever believe it.”  I wish I had always lived my life that way, but I must confess that I have not.  This is such a simple admonition: Always do right so your light will shine bright!

1 Peter 2:14 “ Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by Him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.”

Lord, how odd it is that You say to submit for Your sake, when it seems to be in our best interest to follow this command.  Is it because if we do these things, even if the rulers over us are harsh and unbelieving, we will be better ambassadors for You and will bring more souls into Your kingdom?  I love You, Lord, and want to do Your will.  Please give me the grace to be able to submit to the authorities You place over me and to remember that indeed it is You who has placed them there.
