Jude 5-6 "Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day" NIV
Lord, when I first read verse 5, I thought You were speaking of the Egyptian unbelievers. However; I now realize You were speaking of the incident with Korah and his followers in Numbers 16:1-40. These were Your chosen people who would not follow Your authority and who did not believe. You caused the earth to open and swallow them all. In verse 40 "God said to Moses, This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers."
Just like the Jews of Your day, they had seen Your miracles and yet still did not believe and they would not yield to Yours, or the Father's, authority. They did not suffer immediate judgment as Korah's followers did, but would ultimately in the future at the Last Judgment.
All of these were influenced by Your enemy, Satan, to try to thwart Your perfect plan of salvation, and they were not happy to keep their rebellion and unbelief to themselves, but spread this unbelief to those other Jews around them.
Lord, are there two sets of rebellious angels who "fell" from heaven? Your Word says that 1/3 of the angels fell with Satan in his rebellion and were cast to the earth, but they were not bound in darkness for judgment. I read in Genesis 6:1-2, "When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose." You killed all except Noah and his family in the flood. These angels willing left their home in heaven to marry the daughters of humans. Peter talks about these instances in 2 Peter 2: 4,9 as well. If I am understanding correctly, these angels are not the same ones who fell with Satan because Paul refers to that group as being very active: Ephesians 6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
The enemy's plan has not changed in all of these years. He can no longer thwart Your plan of redemption because You accomplished that on the cross when You, the spotless Lamb of God, willingly sacrificed Yourself as atonement for our sins, and then raised on the third day victorious over sin and death; so he has been for ages trying to pollute Your church with false teaching to make her ineffective in the work You have given her to do: spreading the Good News! The worst deception happens when Your church starts living like the world as if they had never been redeemed. False teachers invite unbelievers into the "church" just to add something else to their worldliness that promises salvation but is false. This leaves them in a worse state than they were to begin with. When they die, they will realize too late that they have been deceived. How very sad!
Rebellion against God is a very serious matter and will not go unpunished. You make that VERY clear! Those who trust in You and Your completed redemptive work on the cross to pay our ransom for our sins and then were raised on the third day and live eternally, will be spared judgment. All others will face the Father's perfect judgment and be cast into hell forevermore.
May I be willing to tell all who You bring to me the Good News, without deception!
Precious Lord, keep Your church ever vigilant and close to Your truth so she can rid herself of these wolves in sheep's clothing, so she can be presented to You a spotless bride!
