Humble Yourself and Submit to Elders

1 Peter 5:5 “Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older.  Clothe yourself in humility toward one another because, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’”

Sweet Lord, how often I have heard the quip, “Hire someone under 25 while they still know everything.”  You tell me that I can either humble myself or be humiliated.  From personal experience, I have found that humbling myself has been far less painful and productive.  Lord, I need grace on a daily basis.  Now that I am considered a senior citizen, I realize how much wisdom I have gained from the “elders” in my life.

Chuck Swindoll said that he had met a lot of beautiful, talented, gifted, and brilliant young people, but had never met one that was wise because wisdom comes with age.  There are few cultures in the industrialized West that revere elders anymore.  In the 60-70s we were taught by the “revolution” not to trust anyone over 30.  How ridiculous!  How Satanic!  Because the Social Security Administration declared the retirement age as 65, now 66, the younger generations assume that at that age people become old and demented instead of wise and trustworthy.  In reality, those “old fogies” are just now ready to lead in the nation, on the job, and in the church.

Lord, help me to be a wise mentor of those around me.  I long to be a productive “elder” to those around me.  Our society is being led down a very dangerous path!  Lord, deliver us!
