1 Peter 5:2 “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be, not greedy for money, but eager to serve;”
Lord, I thank You for the shepherds you have given us at our church. They are precious servants. In the past, and even now, we have seen on TV those who were not true shepherds, but who were more interested in fleecing the flock than serving them; all the while leading secret immoral lives.
Being a shepherd is not an easy task because the “flock” act like sheep! I am sure it is one of the reasons You called Yourself the Good Shepherd and used the sheep analogy so often in Your teaching. I know partly that You used analogies that the agricultural society You lived in would understand the harder things You were trying to teach. Even Isaiah said all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way. The job (service) of being a shepherd is certainly not an easy one or one that should be taken lightly. It requires total selflessness.
We, as their flock, are to take care of their needs as well. That is Your command to us. Some are handsomely recompensed for their service, some not at all because their flock is tiny.
Lord, help me to show my gratitude to our shepherds not only during, “Clergy Appreciation Month”, but all year through.
