Insulting the Poor

James 2:6a “But you have insulted the poor.”
The Life Application Bible note suggests that James is not only speaking of those who have no money, but also to those whose simple values are despised by much of our affluent society.  Perhaps these have chosen: to serve instead of manage, human relationships over financial security, peace instead of power.
Poor folks are usually aware of their powerlessness.  For the rich, their biggest stumbling black is pride because they don’t feel they need God.  For the poor it is bitterness (which comes from pride too) because they don’t have the riches, power, promotion they think they should have.  Poor people fail to realize how blessed they really are.
Dear Lord, even in our churches, we have insulted the poor especially in the second category.  The world looks down on women who chose to stay at home to raise and home school the children You have given them.  They look down on families who have decided to let You decide how many children they should have are being stupid and irresponsible.  In fact these moms and families should be encouraged as they have chosen to live life Your way according to Your plan.
Those who chose to serve instead of looking for promotion and power are shunned a being lazy and lacking initiative.  Those parents who chose not to be workaholics in order to spend time with their children and spouses are shunned as being lacking in drive.
Lord, help us in the church.  We should expect that from the world, but not in Your church!  Forgive us, Lord. Teach and change us!
