The Tongue, a Restless Evil

James 3:8b “It (the tongue) is a restless evil full of deadly poison.”
Restless- unable to be still, being without rest, having the constant need to move.
Poison- chemicals used to produce death.  Used on animal, insects, vegetation, in minute amounts to control disease, and used as a means in capital punishment.  Not ever recommended for human consumption.
Oh Lord, anything that is toxic AND restless is a great danger.  Right now the Japanese people are dealing with radiation poisoning due to the damage done to a nuclear power plant in the recent earthquake and tsunami, but we have had other “poisonings” of water supplies and food crops in the recent past as well.  We might read about the genocide of the Holocaust in Germany, the thousands of our GIs who were affected by being sprayed with Agent Orange (a defoliant), during the Viet Nam war and stand horrified at the human devastation, and yet will speak poison into the lives of our spouses and children and never bat an eye!  Oh Lord, forgive us and make us more aware.
Lord, help us to see the poison in our harts toward others including our enemies.  You have told us to love them and to do goods to them…but in our sinful hearts there is hatred because of the evil they do to us or others.  It is like we just can’t wait to say something hurtful to or about others.  Lord, You did not create our tongue to do this.  You created our tongue to praise You and bless others.  Oh, how we have fallen as humans, and also as Christians.
